Maternal and Child Health

Global Health Network (U) targets over 108,000 people through increased access to RH/FP services and supplies; antenatal care support, delivery care support, new born care, health promotion, nutrition support, growth monitoring, birth and death registration, STI prevention/control, immunization, and public health awareness on diarrhea prevention/control and through a variety of other wrap around services aimed at offering basic life support services. The population is encouraged and engaged to actively participate in development initiatives, within their value systems.

Maternal & Child Health Projects

The overall objective of this initiative is to contribute to the reduction of neonatal, child and maternal morbidity and mortality in Oyam district, through increased use of key maternal and infant/child services and practices and livelihood initiatives.
The high level of child and maternal morbidity and mortality in this district is linked, at least in part, to limited service delivery in rural areas, the community and household levels, and to the quality of the services that do reach them. Statistics from the district show that infant mortality rate (IMR) is 114 deaths per 1,000 live births. Among infant deaths, the majority are within 28 days of birth, and under 5 mortality rate is (U 5MR) 191 deaths per 1,000 live births, one of the highest in the region and country. And maternal mortality rate (MMR) is also one of the regions’ highest at 500 per 100,000 live births.
  • Behavioral change campaign on good MCH practices.
  • Strengthening of healthcare service delivery through provision of MCH supplies and equipment to health facilities and human resource back-stopping.
  • Provision of immunization and vaccination support services to the district/communities.
  • Capacity building of front-line health workers like nurses, midwives and village health teams through quarterly and biannual on site training and refreshers.
  • Sexual and Reproductive Health Education.
  • Community health outreaches for remote communities to provide immunization, family planning services, and antenatal care services.

Accomplishments from last 6 months

  • 44,500 children received Vitamin A tablets.
  • 9,720 doses of multivitamins were distributed to local health centers. Recipients included 324 pregnant women.
  • 223 postnatal mothers and 289 antenatal mothers were reached with information from VHTs.
  • 766 people provided with information on reproductive health through community dialogues.
  • 172 women received access to family planning services.
  • 139 mama kits distributed to pregnant women.
